Icelandic Star Signs Scholarship

Elite Academy player Matthias Sigurdarson has arrived at Columbus State University in Columbus, GA and will continue his college career as a Cougar. Matt hails from Reykjavic in Iceland and has always dreamed of playing college basketball in the USA.

"Without the Elite Academy he would not have signed a scholarship with CSU"

The 6 foot 1 point guard played one year of high school basketball in the USA. He was named to the All-Regions 1st Team and Alabama 6A All-Tournament Team. From this early success Matthias was recruited by Flagler University. He struggled during his Freshman year averaging only 2.7ppg and 1.4apg and he chose to return to his home country to develop.

Returning to the Icelandic Dominos League Matthias flourished, averaging 19.1PPG, 6 Assists and 5 Rebounds and represented the Iceland U18 National Team.

The International Elite Academy recognised Matts development over the last two seasons and during the Summer helped him get back to the NCAA, "Without the Elite Academy, Matt would not have signed a full scholarship with Columbus State and we appreciate everything they have done for us" said Matts father Sigurd.

"If I could afford them, Coach Oxley and Barnes would be on my coaching staff"

Columbus State Coach Robert Moore is a huge supporter of the International Elite Academy and has used the coaching staff to develop and work with his players in the offseason, "If I could afford them, Coach Oxley and Barnes would be on my coaching staff full-time".

Coach Moore is extremly excited to have signed Matt who also had attention from Davidson;

"When Coach Barnes tells you he has a special player for you then you sign them. When I saw Matthias I instantly knew he was right for us, he will bring experience to the backcourt, he can shoot the three and is strong enough to get to the basket".

The coaching staff at the Elite Academy are extremely proud of Matts development and hope to help other Icelandic players transition successfully to the NCAA;

"Matt represents a new generation of European basketball players who have the skills and knowledge to be successful in the NCAA, our job at the academy is to prepare them mentally and physically for the rigours of college basketball" said Coach Oxley.

Coach Barnes is excited for the future, "We will be watching Matt closely during the season and we believe he will open the door for more coaches in the Peach Belt Conference to sign International Players"
